VP, Head of Design & UX
First Republic Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase)
Poor user experiences can often be a result of poor organizational structure. Different teams across different business lines produce different experiences and there are cost operational inefficiencies to this. First Republic was unique in that many clients traversed all businesses including Wealth, Consumer, and Business Banking. My goal was to deliver the best unified experiences across all business lines while increasing development velocity, up-leveling design, and putting better tools and experiences into the hands of our clients. Below are the results of some of those efforts across different business lines.
Consumer App Refactor Goals
Replatform the underlying technology to address performance ● Build using our new component based design system ● Replace main navigation with more logical grouping based on our user research and user testing ● Address feature discovery issues ● Build with accessibility as a core design value, screen reader optimized.
Private Wealth Management Goals
Improve discoverability and hierarchy of wealth navigation ● Align wealth design with our new design library UI toolkit and design principles to keep a consistent experience across Consumer, Wealth, and Business banking ● Completely rebuild the underlying mobile technology based on our new iOS and Android components to increase velocity and quality of future releases ● Replace charting package ● Improve information hierarchy ● Provide a solution for custom account grouping - the ability to view, filter and organize large numbers of accounts ● Drastically reduce the effort of comparing holding data points
Business Banking Goals
Highlight time-sensitive and urgent actions for users. ● Create an initiative navigation based on our user testing that works for both near and long-term features. ● Address the use case of having users with different entitlements/permissions on the same account ● Design a system that creates a clear hierarchy despite being high information density ● Build an interface that scales across segments and scales for small- to large business
